CI/CD SFDX TO MDAPI FORMAT STEP BY STEP Header

Salesforce provides metadata in two formats
1. SFDX format
2. Traditional Metadata (MDAPI) format.

For Example, Objects will have subfolders by SFDX format, in MDAPI format it will be a single
meta-XML file for an object. Please refer to below screenshots.

VS Code has options to retrieve or convert the sfdx format to metadata format. This document explains in detail, how to retrieve the MDAPI format xml files through package.xml 

1. Create a Project in VS Code by default it comes in SFDX format.

2. Install the Salesforce Package.xml Generator Extension for VS Code

3. Open File Explorer (CTRL+SHIFT+E) and (CTRL+SHIFT+P), Select Package XML Generator

4. Select the Metadata Files

In this Example: Selected CustomObject à Contact and Applicatiom_form__c objects

5. Click ‘Update Package.Xml’

6. Open Package.xml to view the updated Package.xml

7. Convert SFDX from Metadata API format

Syntax: sfdx force:mdapi:retrieve -r metadata -u -k manifest/package.xml

8. Open the Terminal – execute the above command

Unpackaged.zip is created under Metadata NewFolder
